Dip Adrenaline
“Learn to predict your dips in advance and decide if you’re able to withstand them or not.”
-Seth Godin at Ruckusmakers
This is part 2 of giving my two cents on dips.
I wrote about unpredictable dips yesterday. Today, I’ll be writing about the second half of Seth’s advice: “deciding if you’re able to withstand them or not”.
Seth’s advice is excellent when facing predictable dips. The dips we can foresee and commit to in advance.
Many struggle with that. After all, giving up due to foreseen difficulties is in our human nature. We see this a lot since we live in a microwave generation.
We know that Seth’s piece of advice is for those who have trouble sticking it out while facing predictable dips.
What about the unpredictable dips? Can you decide to withstand something that you can’t foresee?
This area requires a different type of skill. A skill that has saved me over and over in my lifetime.
The skill I’m referring to is the skill of adaptability.
Seth and I agree that this skill is necessary for any project or life goal.
If the goal of your project is important enough to you, then don’t sweat the unpredictable dips. Be ready for them but don’t sweat them until you’re facing them head on.
The importance of your goal will override any dip that tries side-swiping you. It will become your adrenaline in “dangerous dip facing” times. You’ll adapt swiftly and overcome the dip.
A teacher of mine who Seth also happens to quote a lot says it best:
“When obstacles arise, you change your direction to reach your goal, you do not change your decision to get there.”
-Zig Ziglar
The bottom line is that I agree with Seth’s advice. His aim is to get you to think about what you’re taking on. It doesn’t matter if it’s a project or life goal.
When committing yourself to anything in life, foreseeing your predictable dips in advance and deciding to stick to your guns through the unpredictable ones will make you a winner.
